Biography
Laura McGarrity is an Associate Teaching Professor and has been a part of the Linguistics department since 2004. She earned her B.A. in Russian at Trinity University ('94) and her M.A. and Ph.D. in Linguistics at Indiana University ('03). Her research interests are in phonology and phonological theory -- particularly Optimality Theory and prosodic stress systems in the world's languages, as well as children's phonological acquisition (both typically developing and disordered). She teaches graduate and undergraduate courses on phonology as well as introductory courses on language/linguistics and grammar (both on campus and online). She also developed and teaches a course on the linguistic, sociocultural, psychological, and neurological aspects of swearing and taboo language.
