Kirby completed their PhD in 2019 specializing in sociolinguistics and syntax. Their dissertation, Pronouns Raising and Emerging, explores the sociosyntax of pronouns and gender in English, including reformulating theories of pronoun syntax to explain innovative uses of singular they. Their subsequent work explores further phenomena around the syntax and sociolinguistics of morphosyntactic gender, proper names, pronouns, and other issues relating to transgender linguistics.
