Commencement speaker Dr. Brooke Larson

We finished last academic year (2023-2024) with a departmental commencement ceremony in record attendance and a star appearance by Dubs! Our students and faculty members had another productive academic year,  but the biggest kudos go to our graduating class of 2024: 4 PhD students, 26 Computational Linguistics Master students, 48 undergraduate Linguistics majors, 12 undergraduate Linguistics minors, and 11 American Sign Language minors.

Our Commencement speaker was one of our accomplished alumni, Dr. Brooke Larson, who graduated from UW in 2008 with B.A. in Linguistics & German Language and Literature; with minors in German Linguistics & Finnish (magna cum laude with distinction in Linguistics), went on to get a PhD Linguistics from the University of Maryland, taught linguistics at the University of Iowa and Harvard, worked and published on a variety of topics and languages (including Tagalog, Arabic, Macedonian, Twi, Niuean, Russian, English), worked at Google and Amazon, and in 2022 co-founded speech-synthesis company Rime Labs.
