Sharon Hargus received a National Science Foundation grant for a study on Witsuwit'en Syntax and Intonation. The project will collect information on sentence-level grammar (syntax and intonation) of Witsuwit'en (bcr), an endangered Dene (Athabaskan) language spoken in northern British Columbia, Canada. Professor Hargus hopes to create a book-length treatment on syntax and intonation, a web-based dissemination of texts and other primary data, to train adult learners of Witsuwit'en in the methods and practices of language documentation, and to update and publish an existing Witsuwit’en dictionary.
