HERITAGE LANGUAGE LEARNING AND TEACHING

In this graduate seminar we will examine current research on heritage language learning and teaching. In an attempt to better understand the needs of heritage language learners, we will address issues such as: Who is a heritage speaker? What do heritage learners bring to the classroom? How do heritage learners’ linguistic systems, learning approaches, and socio-affective needs compare to those of second language learners? In mixed classes, how can heritage and second language learners benefit from working together?
The course is intended for graduate students interested in bilingualism and second language acquisition as well as those who are either teaching, or expect to be teaching, heritage language learners.
The language of instruction will be English. Knowledge of Spanish is not required.
